Second-generation South Asian-Canadian Debashis Sinha resynthesizes his own cultural heritage in a meticulous, evocative LP for Establishment.

Storytelling is at the center of The White Dog as it is throughout Sinha’s musical practice. The Toronto-based percussionist is already an award-winning composer and sound designer with frequent work for the theater. That instinct for narrative is woven throughout the LP here, in a work that leads the listener through an inner spiritual quest, continuing the label’s interest in futuristic-ritualist journeys.

In digging into his own Bengali heritage, Sinha has avoided any sense of exoticism or otherness. Instead, following musicological research and field recording across India, Sinha has honed his own personal voice – one that’s rooted in electroacoustic craft and that makes organic digital timbres as its mother language. Regular collaborator Robert Lippok (raster-media), with whom Sinha has played internationally in the duo Knuckleduster, is even on-hand to narrate the role of Buddha. Sound artist Alvin Lucier gets a nod. In that context, the colors from India find a contemporary Canadian electronic paradigm and the precise sound that is Sinha’s alone.

Track by track, the album compiles materials from a live Canadian Music Centre concert, a retelling of Buddha’s awakenings, and scores reworked from audiovisual projects and film scores, imprinted with those programmatic impulses.

But like Lippok and Sinha’s Establishment labelmates, the programmatic and experimental elements here also hint at the pulse and mechanics of dancefloors, with tracks that might well find themselves mixed into unexpected contexts.

Sinha has made himself an established and recognized composer and artist in his Toronto home base and worldwide, with solo appearances at the Sound Symposium, ORF Kunstradio, Deutschlandradio Kultur, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Festival del Arte Radio, Madrid Abierto, MUTEK, the Guelph Jazz Festival, Radio National España, and the International Symposium on Electronic Art, among others. He has previously released work on the Gustaff imprint.
